17 century artists excelled in ceiling paintings and Rosenborg Castle has some significant examples. An outstanding one can be seen in the bed chamber of Christian IV. It depicts the gods of the sky; Hera and Zeus, painted by Abraham Wuchters in the 1660’s.

However, the painting is not only famous for its artistic quality, but also for the resemblance of the goddess Hera to Queen Sophie Amalie.  Christian IV passed away in 1648 and afterwards the bed chamber was used by Queen Sophie Amalie. The Queen was known for her vanity and was portrayed many times during her life. Queen Sophie Amalie and her husband, Frederik III, both delighted in staging absolutism and it is therefore not surprising that she has chosen to have herself rendered as ruler of Mount Olympus. The King, however, was not as bold – he and Zeus share no likelihood.
