Michael Ancher and the Women of Skagen

8 September 2018 – 13 January 2019

The Skagen painter Michael Ancher is a prominent figure within Danish art history. He is particularly well known for his depiction of the fishermen’s harsh lives and the ferocity of the sea, but he also had a keen eye for the women around him: the fishermen’s wives, the young girls, the matriarch of his in-laws, Ane Hedvig Brøndum, and, very importantly, his wife Anna.

With Michael Ancher and the Women of Skagen , the Hirschsprung Collection will present a range of sketches and finished works that elucidate key themes in Ancher’s work with female figures – from intimate character studies to portraits laden with pathos.

The exhibition is created in co-operation with the Art Museums of Skagen and Ribe Kunstmuseum, showing key masterpieces from the three museum’s collections. It will be accompanied by a major catalogue featuring articles by the exhibition curators and specialists within the field.
