Spring in The Porcelain Cabinet

The trees are getting greener and greener these days and spring flowers spread joy all around town. Because not many things are as beautiful as flowers, in alle their individuality. The interest in flora and fauna is not a new thing, but the motive is still one of the most popular in the world of art. At Rosenborg Castle you can experience one of the prime examples on the meeting between the botanical science and art, namely the flower decorated porcelain “Flora Danica”.

In the castle’s porcelain cabinet the flowers bloom all year long. From floor to ceiling the room is decorated with beautiful porcelain. Flora Danica is manufactored by The Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory, and draws inspiration from the botanist and painter Maria Sibylla Merian’s detailed registrations of nature.

That guests can experience the porcelain at Rosenborg Castle today, is actually quite the coincidence. Originally the porcelain was ordered as a gift from Christian 7. to Catherine the Great of Russia. Catherine died before the factory had finished, which resulted in the danish royal house keeping the valubale collection.

When you have been out and about admiring the flowers in The King’s Garden, you can continue your spring day by visiting The Porcelain Cabinet in the castle. Read more about the castle and its opening hours here.
