Upcoming exhibition: Sonja Ferlov Mancoba

9 February – 5 May 2019

This February, SMK will present the largest exhibition ever staged of the sculptures, paintings, collage and drawings created by Danish-French artist Sonja Ferlov Mancoba (1911–84).

With this exhibition, we bring to light one of the most important artists in Denmark in modern times, telling the story of a truly unique figure whose life and art remained inextricably interwoven throughout her life.

…Only through each other can we live and breathe, and no-one creates anything entirely alone…

Sonja Ferlov Mancoba had a lifelong interest in non-Western culture. Here she found art that seemed to her more human than the one produced by Western culture in her day. Art that she regarded as exemplary expressions of the sense of community and inter-human connectedness for which she fought.

A global outlook and a firm belief in community across cultures are recurring themes throughout Sonja Ferlov’s art and life. She saw her art as a bulwark against a growing materialism and lack of fellow feeling and solidarity in modern society.

The archival materials used for the book and exhibition were kindly lent by the Sonja Ferlov Mancoba, Ernest Mancoba and Wonga Mancoba Memorial Foundation.
