Elegant portraits painted in pastels were a specialty of Danish artist Christian Horneman (1765–1844). The delicate shades recall a sensitive time back in the early 1800s, and in this Corner Exhibition The Hirschsprung Collection brings together four examples of Horneman’s virtuoso skill. The four portraits transport us to the highest diplomatic circles in Europe as well as to dramatic events in North Africa as we seek to unearth the sitters’ identities from an art-historical perspective.
Corner Displays are small, intimate exhibitions presented in a corner of the museum. Each Corner Display focuses on a particular corner of the collection, highlighting masterpieces from the collection, hidden gems and oddities.
